6. Audience, and audience interpretation of the work

With these experimental videos they can start off ecentrically, seeming not to be directed pieces but an almagamation of thoughts, ideas and feelings made into video. Therefore straight from the beginning as a viewer your expectations are disoriented. Yet all the movies are intriguing and make you want to see what happens next or why this is happening this way. Such as in telling lies the tone of the caller’s voice is also strangely low and dazed, which draws in the viewer as you want to find out why. Not all the videos have a deeper message to portray their merely created to show a different perspective or way you can communicate video such as Gizele Kerozenes piece in which 3 witches chase each other. If you knew the sypnopsis before you watched it, you wouldnt be on waiting on tenterhooks to see it, yet watching it you actually see the difficulty of the craft of having to cut scenes of people jumping to give the illusion of flight. As an audience you see this is a very innovative idea, whether you think it was good is your opinion but it opens you up to new film experiences.

5. How these works might inspire your own work

How koyaanisqatsi would inspire my own work

The exclusion of dialogue and characters is very unusual yet insightful. I'm inspired by the way the director has captured the processes of everyday life and used them to tell a story. Such as filming the hustle and bustle of a fast food restaurant over a long period of time and fast forwarding to actually show how fast paced and intensely hectic our lifestyles our. Yet because there is no dialogue and no characters the scenes aren't as manipulated to mean something, its whatever the viewer interprets is what it means.

3. Narrative and non-narrative structures

Narrative and non-narrative structures used in Dollface and John smith's girl chewing gum

Doll face has a clearly defined beginning, middle and end. It starts off by the face wanting to be like the screen it sees it front of it, so it changes it self several times to look like the face on the screen. You can tell this is a beginning beacuse the scenes set so we know the main chracter trying to achieve a goal, and we can see what the goal is. The the middle is when the screen begins to strain it self to follow the screen that its tryin to pursue so it can copy the face. We can tell this is a middle because now the main character is in conflict- yet in this situation its with itself whether or not it should pursue its set out goal. The end is when the mechanism with the screen on it finally buckles and the screen breaks. Now this shows the resolution to the narritive story as the character made the decision to pursue its goal at the risk of dieing and in this narrative the director has made a point of killing the character to show that this goal was never achievable.

Yet in contrast, smiths girl chewing gum hasnt got any specific narritive structure. There are no main characters, so each character has their own short-term goals such as the pedestrians crossing the road or crowds of people queing to get in the cinema. Also theres no conflict involved as the director has imposed himself to be instructing whats to happen, consequently no one is going to disagree or go against what is being said. Additionally you could start watching at any part of the film because of the fly-on-the wall style used, if there were a narrative structure there would be cut-scenes not continuous filming.

2. The use of technology and techniques and styles

Technology, techniques and styles used in Telling lies and Dollface

The only visuals we get in telling lies are of words flashing as a narration of characters voices although there are subtle differences between how bright the words flash and their size. The conversations are sharp and realistic like its real. The sounds that help achieve this are: the ringing tones, the dial tones and the slight muffled ness of the voices- this is mainly due to the fact they actually recorded using real telephones. Although this may be the case we don’t actually see any source of sound so its non-diagetic. Although this is not very difficult to do, it was not all of it was possible to do thirty years ago so its quite modern technology similar to Dollface. This is because doll face was created using quite advanced combination of animation and 3-d graphics. This type of technology has been only available in the past two decades so it’s relatively new. Therefore this shows that the audience that the video is trying to reach with its message is to the current generation.

1. Discussion of past and current artists and works

Discussing telling lies With 1001 nights
In telling lies you can tell its experimental within the first ten seconds of watching as there are no actual visuals, apart from flashes of words that the characters are saying. This is similar to 1001 nights in the way that the visuals arent conventional as in nights there are five stills of people who each take a turn to tell a story, this immediately as a viewer your disorientates your expectations. Telling lies is trying to address the fact about how we as society or people lie so easily and twist the truth so we either tell people what they want to hear, or what will get us out of trouble. Similarly in 1001 nights the movie addresses society as a whole not a niche few with the message that people caught up in the atrocity of war are also everyday people like you and me. This is shown in 1001 nights as the actual women who's stories these orginated are middle eastern where as the director purposefully uses run of the mill english women to represent that these women are the english equivalent of the middle eastern women. Also in 1001 nights the director purposefully shows the actual lies of the people so we as an audience can imagine what reaction the recipient would give if the caller told the truth.
